#2: Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore is one of America’s most recognizable landmarks, and many travelers add it to a road trip through South Dakota because of its patriotic image. The carved presidential faces, Black Hills setting, visitor center, and evening lighting ceremony make it feel like a classic stop on a cross-country itinerary.

Some visitors are surprised by how quick the actual visit can be. The monument may look smaller than expected in person, and the surrounding area can feel very touristy, with souvenir shops and roadside attractions nearby. Travelers wanting more natural scenery might prefer Custer State Park or Badlands National Park.
