Safeway
How Many Stores Closing: 2–3
Current Value of the Business: $4.96 billion*
Safeway has been swept into Albertsons’ broader 2026 store review, with select locations closing while the parent company evaluates weaker parts of its supermarket footprint. Fast Company reported that closures across Albertsons-owned banners have included Safeway, Vons, Acme, Randalls, and Balducci’s.

This is not a case of Safeway disappearing from the map. The banner is still one of Albertsons’ most recognizable grocery names, especially in the West. Standalone public revenue is not cleanly reported by Albertsons, but ECDB estimates Safeway’s 2025 annual sales at about $4.96 billion, giving the chain real weight even as a few stores get cut.
