Amazon Go’s cashierless convenience-store experiment is coming to an end. Amazon announced it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores in 2026, with reports putting the Amazon Go footprint at about 14 to 15 stores at the time of the announcement.

The idea once felt futuristic: walk in, grab what you need, and leave without a checkout line. But the economics never fully matched the hype. Amazon is now putting more energy behind Whole Foods, same-day grocery delivery, and smaller Whole Foods Market Daily Shop locations instead of keeping the Go format alive.
