Winning an Academy Award should have opened every door for Hattie McDaniel, whose performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind made her the first Black Oscar winner. Instead, Hollywood continued viewing the talented singer, comedian, and actress mainly as a servant on screen afterward.

Despite her talent and historic victory, McDaniel was repeatedly offered maids, cooks, enslaved women, and “mammy” figures. White studios rarely imagined Black women outside those stereotypes. She accepted available work and gave the characters dignity, but the industry kept her public image trapped in service.
